Avoiding trouble with expertise
Client: Industrial Facility
Situation: An industrial client had an expiring contract, and the entire market was significantly higher than it was when the contract began. The client was looking at a $70,000 per year increase if it locked in a fixed rate at current market conditions and had not budgeted for such a large increase.
Solution: Satori Energy’s analytics team evaluated the client’s load profile and usage patterns and applied that profile to historic index energy rates. The results showed that there would be a slight savings if the index performed exactly as they had for the previous 24 months. That knowledge, along with Satori Energy’s insight that the wholesale market would decrease in the near future, led us to recommend that the client enter into an index contract with the ability to lock a portion of the electricity usage at any time.
Satori Energy continued to monitor the wholesale market and advised the client when the wholesale market had decreased by 10 percent, and at that point we helped the client lock in 50 percent of its energy usage. The results were savings of $60,000 versus the fixed rate at the end of the year, and a greatly mitigated increase in the client’s budget that fiscal year.
Finding and fixing a problem
Client: Property Management Firm
Situation: While monitoring a load profile for a client, our analytics team noticed that the kilowatt demand reading for one particular month was significantly higher than previous months.
Solution: We contacted the client to ask if anything specific at the property would have caused this marked increase. Then we obtained the interval data to identify the specific day and hour in which the spike occurred. We then worked with the facilities manager and engineer at the property and discovered that there was no reasonable explanation for the spike.
Satori Energy instructed the utility to complete an audit of the meters at the property, and the audit revealed that a faulty meter had provided an erroneous reading. The utility switched the meter, and we ensured that the client received the proper credits. This discovery resulted in a savings of $5,000 in demand charges and of more than $25,000 in capacity charges.
